If you are having persistent side effects (i.e. proctitis, cystitis) lasting months to years after radiation therapy to the pelvis, a new study reports a 76-89% improvement in these symptoms using hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT).
How Does HBOT Work?
HBOT is a technique that is well recognized for being able to speed tissue and wound healing by placing a patient in a pressurized room (or “chamber”) and raising the air pressure up to 3 times higher than normal air pressure while you breath 100% oxygen. Under these conditions, your lungs absorb much more oxygen than would be possible breathing 100% oxygen at normal air pressure. Your blood carries this oxygen throughout your body, stimulating the release of substances called growth factors and stem cells, which promote healing. Each treatment is called a “dive” and usually takes 1-2 hours per session. Most treatment courses use 40-80 dives for optimal benefit.
Indications For HBOT In Oncology: soft tissue necrosis, osteoradionecrosis, chronic cystitis, chronic prostatitis
