I often get asked this question: “How do I know what dose of CBD to use.” While everyone is very different, here is my typical response.
Start at a low dose and titrate up
I recommend starting at a dose of 10 mg and increase the dose in 5 mg increments every 2-3 days
More is not necessarily better
There is an optimal dose of CBD for each person, but this has to be determined by trial and error. Once this dose level has been reached, many people find that higher doses can either decrease the desired effects or provide no further benefit.
Data show that the effective dose for CBD is characterized by an inverted “U” shaped curve.

Most people will achieve their optimal dose between 10mg and 40mg daily with high quality, full-spectrum CBD oil.
I typically recommend taking a total of 1-2 doses of CBD per day (if taking CBD 2-times/day, take it every 12 hours)
Here’s an example of how to find your ideal dose:
- Day 1: 10mg
- Day 2: 10mg
- Day 3: 10mg
- Day 4: 15mg (feels better than 10mg)
- Day 5: 15mg
- Day 6: 20mg (feels better than 15mg)
- Day 7: 20mg
- Day 8: 25 mg (does not feel different than 20mg…OR feels worse)
- Day 9: Return to 20mg. This is the optimal dose.
Onset of Action and Duration
Depending on the product and route of administration, the onset of action and duration of effects will vary:
- Inhalation: vaporizer. Onset: immediate. Duration: 2-4 hours.
- Ingestion: edible, in capsules, ingested oil, food or liquid. Onset: 30 mins – 2 hours. Duration: 6-12 hours.
- Oral: tincture, under tongue. Onset: 15-60 mins. Duration: 4-6 hours.
Full Spectrum vs CBD Isolates
Full spectrum products have a wide range of cannabinoids and terpenes. Typically, this range is in the naturally occurring ratios from their source strain. The combination of these compounds often leads to synergistic effects (also known as “entourage effects”), which may improve the desired effective of the medicine.
CBD isolates include only “pure” CBD and no detectable levels of other cannabinoids or terpenes.
Bioavailability:
Each delivery method creates a specific level of bioavailability. This refers to how much CBD content can actually get absorbed into your bloodstream. Vaping has the highest bioavailability. CBD vape juice can provide similar results to CBD capsules, edibles and oral tinctures while requiring you to use less product, making it one of the most efficient delivery systems for cannabidiol.
- CBD capsules and edibles – 5-15%
- CBD tinctures – 20-30%
- CBD vape oil – 40-50%
So, if you vape 10 mg of CBD, your body can only absorb 4-5 mg of it. Keep this in mind when calculating your dosage. If you change your method of delivery, you’ll need to adjust your dosage according to its bioavailability.

CBD Dosing for Vaping:
How much CBD is in each puff? There is no real definitive answer to this question, as each CBD vape pen is capable of different levels of vapor output, and each person’s puffs take in different amounts of vapor. A standard 1 mL cartridge can provide anywhere from 100-200 puffs in total, depending on puff duration. A 1 mL cartridge containing 200 mg CBD will give you around 1-2 mg of CBD per puff.

CBD Dosing with Edibles:
Edibles are typically available in specified mg dosages per serving, so it should be easy to determine how much CBD you’re getting in any one dose.
Start with 10 mg, see how you feel after 90 minutes and then take another 10 mg if you haven’t achieved the relief or state of mind you’re looking for. With edibles, due to lower absorption rates from ingestion, higher mg are usually required vs. taking CBD oil sublingually under your tongue or vaping it.
